For many parents, a trip to the dentist with a toddler or primary schooler seems like it is purely about hunting for cavities. In the real world, checking for tooth decay is only one small part of a much larger puzzle.

Toddlers (Ages 1–3): Setting the Foundation

The Australian Dental Association recommends a child’s first visit happen around their first birthday, or when their first tooth appears. At this early stage, the screening is highly focused on developmental tracking.

• Eruption Patterns: We check that baby teeth are arriving in the correct order and timeline.
• Gums and Soft Tissue: We look for any signs of tongue-ties or lip-ties that could affect breastfeeding, solid feeding, or early speech sounds.
• Habit Review: We casually chat about thumb-sucking, pacifier use, and sleep patterns, as these early habits can influence how the front jaws shape themselves.

Primary Schoolers (Ages 4–7): The Transition Phase

This is one of the most dynamic growth periods for a child’s mouth. Around age six, the first permanent adult molars begin to erupt at the very back of the mouth, often without replacing any baby teeth.

• Jaw Growth Space: We assess whether the jaw is expanding enough to accommodate the larger adult teeth that are waiting under the gums.
• Bite Alignment: We check how the upper and lower jaws meet. Spotting an underbite, crossbite, or severe overbite early allows for gentle, interceptive guidance rather than complex orthodontic work later.
• Airway Tracking: We look at tonsil size and dental arch width. If a child snores, breathes mostly through their mouth, or grinds their teeth at night, it can sometimes point to restricted breathing that impacts their sleep quality.

Tweens and Teens (Ages 8+): Monitoring the Final Alignment

As your child moves toward high school, our focus shifts to coordinating the final mix of baby and adult teeth.

• Orthodontic Timing: We monitor the natural loss of baby teeth. If baby teeth are lost too early or held onto for too long, it can cause adult teeth to emerge off-course. This is the ideal window to determine if or when an orthodontic assessment might be beneficial.
• Fissure Sealants: We inspect the deep grooves of the permanent molars to see if applying a thin, protective coating would help seal out plaque in cavity-prone areas.
