What is a Periodontist?

Chances are you have been to a dentist, but may not have heard of the term ‘periodontist’. If you’ve had a recent referral for periodontal work, you may have a few questions.

What’s a periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist with a specialisation in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease and oral inflammation. They also specialise in the placement of dental implants.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a set of artificial tooth roots implanted in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. These closely mimic a real tooth, which makes it an attractive alternative to dentures and bridges. Our clinical staff team is certified to perform advanced dental implant systems such as Nobel Biocare, Biomet 3i, Astra Tech and Straumann.

What is periodontal disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an important condition to keep an eye out for. It affects the support structures for teeth, and can go undetected due to it being painless. If extensive progression occurs, a patient may experience bone and tooth loss.

Our team of hygienists are properly trained to help prevent and treat gum disease. If the condition has progressed to a stage in which you require treatment from a specialist, our relationships with local and Sydney-based periodontists will help you preserve your oral health.

Morrin Dental is equipped to suit your oral health needs. Our staff are passionate and dedicated to making your dental experience a pleasant and comfortable one. With proper active maintenance, your smile can remain healthy for many years to come.

To comply with the AHPRA Legislation we are required to advise that “Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.”
